Founded in 1218 by King Alfonso IX, the University of Salamanca (USAL) is the oldest university in Spain and the entire Hispanic world. For over 800 years, it has been a global center for the humanities, law, and sciences.

The university was a pioneer in international law and played a crucial role in the planning of Christopher Columbus’s voyage. The university is arguably most famous worldwide for its department of International Courses (Cursos Internacionales). Here is why it stands out:
Global Pioneers: USAL was one of the first universities in the world to offer Spanish language programs for international students, starting in 1929.
The Academic Authority: The University of Salamanca is the primary academic body responsible for developing and grading the DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) and SIELE exams in collaboration with the Cervantes Institute. Essentially, they set the standards for how Spanish is taught and evaluated globally.
